Attie Camp May

Attie Camp May, 93, of Lexington, widow of the Rev. Carl May, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012. Born in York, SC on August 5, 1918 she was a daughter of the late John and LaUna Camp. She was educated at Montreat, Winthrop, UNC-G and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education earning three masters degrees. She taught Bible at East Rowan High School in Salisbury, NC. She was a librarian at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. In SC she worked for and retired from the SC Commission on Aging where she was instrumental in forming the “RSVP” program (retired senior volunteer program) across the state.

Attie was by her husband’s side for 52 years as he served pastorates in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina. After retirement, they traveled extensively to Africa, Alaska, Austria, Egypt, England, France, Greece and Germany. They also spent one and a half years in Israel studying and helping to classify rare books at the Jerusalem YMCA Library.

She is survived by two daughters, Leatha Jean May Lefler and Anna LaUna May; two grandchildren, John Michael Lefler and Angela Lauren Lefler; and a great-grandson, Tristan Keisler; son-in-law, John S. Lefler; four sisters-in-law, Emily Camp, Ray Dean Camp, Hazel Camp and Virginia Hatcher; a very special niece, Pat Williams, as well as many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Leatha Chambers; brothers, Abner, Elmer, George, John, Robert and Joe Camp.

A Christian service of resurrection and hope celebrating the life of Attie May will be held 2:00 o’clock Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Presbyterian Communities of SC Chapel, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington. The family will greet friends following the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church, York, SC.
