COLUMBIA - Beatrice “Cookie” Roberts Atkerson passed away at her home on July 4th. Cookie was born on July 28th, 1946 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of Henriette J. “Rita” (nee Fellner) and Roland L. Roberts, Sr. She moved to the United States with her parents at the age of two, and lived in several states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Georgia and South Carolina. She spent most of her life in South Carolina being a long time resident of both Columbia and Sumter. Cookie graduated from Dentsville High School in 1964 and subsequently worked as an administrative assistant in the entertainment, health, insurance, and legal professions. Cookie was an avid reader and a wonderful cook, and she enjoyed sharing a meal with those she loved.
She was predeceased by her late husband James M. Atkerson of Winnsboro. She is survived by her brothers and sister-in-law Roland L. Roberts, Jr. of Dallas, Texas, Gregory J. Roberts of Columbia, and James S. (Nancy L.) Roberts of Tyrone, Georgia; her former husband Pat Martin of Sumter, and also by many nieces and nephews and their children in Texas, Florida and South Carolina whom she dearly loved. Her family and friends will always remember her outgoing personality, her beautiful smile, her hearty laugh and her love for dogs and cats.
Given the current health crisis that makes travel and congregation problematic, the family asks that Cookie’s friends join them in spirit from wherever they may be and release a helium filled balloon in her honor on Saturday, July 18th at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Those wishing to make charitable contributions are asked to consider The Humane Society, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
