Bernardo Rivera Suarez
December 8, 1934 – December 9, 2018
On Sunday, December 9, 2018, Bernardo Rivera Suarez, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away suddenly at the age of 84 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC. A native of San German, Puerto Rico, Bernardo served with distinction in The United States Army from February 1, 1956 to January 2, 1958 where he received The Post Soldier of the Week Award on May 24, 1957 and was an active baseball player for the Camp Leroy Johnson Baseball Team in Louisiana. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he rejoined as an active National Guardsmen for an additional three years and received a degree in Bookkeeping and Accounting, beginning a career working for the government of Puerto Rico which lasted for 40+ years. Bernardo will forever be remembered by his wife of 65 years, Thelma Rodriguez and their children, Sylvia Gonzalez, Jaime Rivera, and Ivan Rivera. Bernardo will also be fondly remembered by his two grandchildren, Willis Gonzalez and Sharymar Huntley, and by his three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Julian, and Camille. Bernardo is predeceased by his father, Alfonso Rivera and mother, Cruz Suarez. He is also survived by three loving siblings, Ramon Rivera Suarez, Casto “Wilfredo” Rivera Suarez and Milagros Rivera Suarez. Bernardo enjoyed proudly serving in The United States Army, playing baseball, and cooking. Services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 3:00 pm at The Fort Jackson National Cemetery located in Columbia, SC. The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, sympathy, and kindness shown to them during this time of bereavement.
