COLUMBIA - Colonel (US ARMY RET) James Ray Henegar, 91, of Blythewood, died Saturday, November 16, 2019. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church. Burial and military honors in Fort Jackson National Cemetery will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, November 20, 2019 prior to the funeral service. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel.
James was born November 15, 1928 in Knoxville, TN to Herbert Andrew and Willie Florine Smith Henegar. He attended Clemson College where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He left prior to enlist in the United States Army where Colonel Henegar served his country proudly for 27 years. He served as a tank Commander in the Korean War where his company helped to establish the Demilitarized Zone. He served two tours in Vietnam. He is the recipient of the Combat Infinity Badge, two Bronze Stars, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, United Nations Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Unit Citation (second Award), Vietnam Air Service Medal Honor Class and the Vietnam Navy Service Medal Honor Class. He was a member of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Walter Henegar and sister, Hazel Sharpe. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Patricia Henegar; two daughters, Deana DeLaBarre (Eric), Janice Metzger (Michael); a son, Charles “Chuck” Henegar (Cheryl); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Henderson.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of The Palmettos of Parklane and Lighthouse Hospice Group for their friendship and care.
