He was born on September 29, 1955 in Greenville, SC to Donald Lane McMillin, Sr. and Wilma Carter McMillin. He grew up with a love of music, the outdoors, and just about anything he could take apart and put back together. Don moved several times as a child, making friends at every stop along the way. Finally landing back in Columbia, SC, he went to AC Flora High School and went on to attend classes at Midlands Technical College, showing an interest and passion for math and mechanical engineering.
Taking his mechanical engineering expertise to work, Don started working for The Poe Corporation in 1980 until he left to co-found Quality Industrial Distribution in 1993. He stayed with QID until he retired in 2010.
When Don was not working, he found complete joy in his family. Raising two little girls, Melissa and Rachel, was his greatest accomplishment. He shared with them his love for music and all things mechanical! He brought up two of the most industrious, lawn-mowing women you may ever meet.
Don met his late wife, Robin Shealy McMillin, in 1988 and they married in 1990. He too shared his musical passion with Robin, as Don played anything with strings and Robin the piano. Don and Robin were founding members of Living Springs Lutheran Church in Northeast Columbia, where Don held several board and lay positions. Don and Robin also loved cooking and traveling together, having left their hearts in San Francisco!
He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Cofar and Rachel Noyes (Daniel); sister, Deidra McMillin and four grandchildren, Willa and Max Cofar, Molly and Lucy Noyes.
The family is currently planning a celebration of life for a later date. More details to come.
