Dr. Wing Hong (Frank) Hui passed away June 20, 2022 at the age of 87 in Columbia, South Carolina following complications from a stroke. He led an active and full life having lived, studied, and worked in multiple countries before settling in Columbia, where he devoted 41 years of his life as a psychiatrist in the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.
Born on March 11, 1935 in Canton, China to Hui Chun Po and Cheng Wing Kai, he moved to Hong Kong as a child and then attended school in Taipei, Taiwan, where he attained his medical degree at the National Defense Medical Center. After receiving his medical degree he lived and worked as a doctor between 1964-1970 for Project Concern in Dam Pao, South Vietnam. There he provided medical care and support for the Montagnard people. He felt his 6 years in Vietnam were the happiest years for him professionally, where he was really able to make a difference in helping the poor. After his years in Vietnam he moved to the United States where he settled in Columbia, SC and began his career at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, starting with his psychiatric training at William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute. He worked for many years at Crafts-Farrow State Hospital as a geriatric psychiatrist, eventually becoming Chief Psychiatrist for the hospital. He then moved to the main SC State Hospital Campus on Bull Street after Crafts-Farrow and the State Hospital consolidated their services. During the last decade of his career he worked as an addiction psychiatrist at G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital and Morris Village Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Facility, retiring in 2013.
Throughout his life Wing enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife Alice (Chan May Ling), joined sometimes by their children. When he became a grandfather his attention shifted. He loved playing with his grandchildren and enjoyed the simple fun he could have with them: hiding candy in his pockets for them to find, spoiling them with after school treats, and being the first to greet his grandsons after they awoke from their naps. He revelled in sharing moments of play, mischief, and amusement with them.
He is survived by Alice, his wife of 56 years; daughters Yvonne Hui (Carrie Phipps), Arlene Hui (Stuart Cocks) and Frances Hui (Robert Cutts), and his beloved grandchildren Sophie, Olivia, and Charlie Cocks and Owen and Miles Cutts.
The family would like to thank the staff of NHC HealthCare Parklane and Caris Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and diligent care over the past months.
As per Wing’s request there will be no funeral service.
