Edgar Lee Pittman Jr.
September 23, 1952 – September 7, 2018
Edgar Lee Pittman, Jr., 65, lovingly known and remembered as Butch, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018. A memorial service conducted by Rev. Jeff Phillips will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Woodfield Park Baptist Church, 1834 Morninglo Lane. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m.
Born in Anniston, Alabama, he was a son of the late Edgar L. Pittman, Sr. and Kaoru Kodama. Butch lived abroad as a young military brat, but he considered Columbia, South Carolina as his hometown. He was a graduate of Spring Valley High School, Class of 1971, and attended the University of South Carolina and Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University). Butch had been a member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church and attended St. Andrews Baptist Church. He was a retired handyman and had previously worked in the government, retail, and construction industries. He was a voracious reader of history books, practiced martial arts, and enjoyed chatting with friends over coffee or a meal. Butch also loved spending time with the families of childhood friends, CBC classmates and professors, and colleagues.
He is survived by his sister, Becky Pittman, and many cousins in the Eastern United States and Tokyo, Japan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant sister, Kay Frances.
The family would like to thank the medical teams at South Carolina Oncology Associates and Palmetto Health Baptist for their care provided this year. They would also like to express special thanks to the friends who assisted his sister with Butch’s transportation and other caregiving needs: Pastor Jeff, Karen, and John.
Memorials may be made to Woodfield Park Baptist Church, to ministries in your community that assist the working poor with food or utilities, and to the organizations that promote awareness of colon and liver cancer and survivor care.
