COLUMBIA – Mary Elizabeth Glover Davis was born on September 5, 1914 in Columbia, SC and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 24, 2017. She was blessed with 102 years of an abundantly filled life.
In 1936 she married Platte Davis. They moved to Atlanta, GA during WWII where Aunt Lib worked as a war bonds clerk. They returned to the Earlewood community in the 1950’s, where she worked for the Federal Government for 30 years in clerical positions.
Aunt Lib was an avid learner, reader and conversationalist. She attended Columbia College, where she studied art and history and took many classes at the Shepherd Center. She shared her knowledge with a passion and loved to discuss many topics, including politics. She continued to read throughout her life for pleasure and the love of learning.
Although Aunt Lib had no children, she treated her nieces and nephews as her own. She made sure certain family members who desired to further their education could do so by providing them financial support. She was constantly present in their lives.
Aunt Lib was a lifelong member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia. She contributed financially to repairing the bells, buying stained glass windows and providing seat covers for the pews. She was a founding member of the “What Cha-Doing” club, which met at Earlewood Park for 40 years. She worked tirelessly for the Earlewood Community Association and helped publish a book about the history of the Earlewood community. She also worked to bring a fountain that was originally in the park back to its original home.
On her 100th birthday, the city of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department created a garden in front of the new Earlewood Park community building and named it in honor of Mrs. Davis.
She was predeceased by her parents, Loulie and Lonnie Glover; her husband, Platte Davis; her brothers, Paul Edward and James, and her sister, Ruth G. Smith. She is survived by her three nieces, Karen Fuqua, Marilyn Glover and Lynn Scott, sixteen great nieces and nephews and their children.
A breakfast and visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church, 1118 Union St., Columbia, SC 29201 on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 followed by a Celebration of Life service and interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
