Blythewood -Elizabeth Alice Shaw, 86, entered into eternal rest Tuesday January 30, 2018 at her home. A graveside service will be held at noon on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Beaufort National Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel is assisting the family.
Born July 10, 1931, in Cottageville, SC; she was the daughter of the late Luden Carnell and Martha Redman Adams. Raised in Givhans, SC, Ms. Shaw told many stories about life on a farm, driving a new Mercury and the mischief her sister and she would cause.
Ms. Shaw met her future husband, Owen Wilson Shaw, when she attended Columbia Finishing School in 1949 and they were married in November 1950, were blessed with four children and celebrated over 56 years together. After raising her four children, Ms. Shaw returned to school and became a graduate of Roper School of Nursing. She was proud to say she was one of the first LPNs to give medications at Roper Hospital. Her career transitioned to the Roper OBGYN medical offices where she assisted, Dr. Finch, Dr. Finger, Dr. William, Dr. Wilson and Dr. Simmons until her retirement in 1994. Ms. Shaw’s smile lit up the room when she talked about her time as a nurse and “her” patients.
After her retirement, Ms. Shaw enjoyed caring for her family, her flowers and her dogs. She could be found getting out of bed late, drinking coffee at her kitchen table and reading the newspaper- usually aloud to whomever was in the room with her. She was a wonderful cook and could always feed a crowd, even if unannounced.
Ms. Shaw is survived by her four children: Owen Shaw, Jr. (Evelyn) of Florida, Barbara Wallace (Grant) of Florida, Susan Buckingham of Maryland and Linda Herstine (Tony) of South Carolina as well as ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Ms. Shaw is preceded in death by her husband, Owen Wilson Shaw, Sr. and her sister, Georgia Mae Adams.
Ms. Shaw was blessed with the ability to love with an everlasting love. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Julie Cram and the caring staff of Lutheran Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association be made in honor of Ms. Shaw. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
