Ellen J Barker

IRMO - Funeral services for Ellen Johnson Barker, 90, who passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Salem United Methodist Church in Irmo with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ellen was born on August 17, 1923 in Kingstree, SC. She was the daughter of the late F.L. and Marie Johnson. She was predeceased by her husband, James B. Barker, Jr. (Bunny) and two brothers and a sister.

Ellen was a 1946 graduate of Columbia School of Nursing and worked in various healthcare settings. She retired from Dorn VA Hospital in 1986. She truly had a servant’s heart and was a caring and compassionate nurse to our Veterans and all of her patients, as well as to all of her family. Ellen met her husband, who was a Marine and a patient at the VA and they were married for 62 years.

Survivors include sons, James B. Barker, III (Kathy), Carroll Barker (Jacci); daughters, Catherine Lempesis (Chris) and Marie Connolly (Pat); grandchildren, Bunnie Ward (Ward), Brent Barker, Christopher Lempesis (Mary Jordan) of Beaufort, Mandy Bruce (Jason), Alan Barker, Patrick Connolly of New York, NY and Jenifer Awtrey (Matt) of Anderson and also seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Salem United Methodist Church, 1321 Salem Church Road, Irmo, SC 29063. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Regency Hospice, Barbara Oliver and the staff of Morningside of Lexington and also, Dr. Christopher Wicker, Dr. Lori Lord and caregiver, Lori Edwards for their loving and wonderful care during this time.
