George Entzminger, a long time resident of Columbia, passed away early Thursday morning August 6, 2026 of complications due to age. George was 94 years old. George was a hard working family man, whose main focus was making a good life for that family.
George worked for Bell South and then AT&T for 38 years before he retired. In that capacity and during that time he was truly one of the pioneers of communications since he was part of the development of telephone communications from clunky relays where one office took almost a full city block to computerized digital systems where an office serving the same number of people fit in an actual 10' x 10' office. After retirement from AT&T, George became active in the Telephone Pioneers of America, a charitable service organization that, among other things, was responsible for providing and servicing Talking Book Machines for the blind. He worked with the Columbia chapter of the Pioneers for 20 years, and was Chapter president for one year.
George was also active in his church in the Rosewood community of Columbia and served on various organizing committees during that time.
George is survived by his wife, Doris L. (Martin) Entzminger, after 72 years of marriage. He is also survived by his four children, George Entzminger Jr. (spouse Susan), Brenda Stokes (spouse Ken), Betina Entzminger, and Gil Entzminger (spouse Carolyn); grandchildren, Kenny, Christy, Ashley, Brittany, Grayson, Will, and Justin, as well as 8 great-grandchildren so far.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wilburn Lawton Entzminger and Dochia Neely Entzminger and his sister, Alice Fowler.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, with burial in Sandy Level Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
