Gregory Lee West

Gregory Lee West, 75, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Born in Altoona, Iowa, on October 15, 1949, Greg was the beloved son of the late Anderson Franklin West and Bonnie Buhrmaster West.

Greg proudly served his country with distinction, beginning with two tours in Vietnam. His dedication to service continued for over two decades until his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1996. Following his military career, Greg began a second chapter working in the IT department at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.

An avid bowler, Greg was well known in the local bowling community. He served as secretary of the Century Lanes Bowling League at Fort Jackson, was an active member of the Midlands Bowling Association and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), and supported regional bowling efforts throughout the Southeast.

Greg was a lifelong do-it-yourself enthusiast, though his projects were often completed on “Greg Time.” His wit, warmth, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Greg is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Lynda West; his son Dennis West, daughter-in-law Elaine West, and their son Dennis West Jr.; and his daughter Cydney Franklin, son-in-law Andrew Franklin, and their son Miles Franklin. He is also remembered by the family of his late daughter, Sallie West, including her children Dustin West, Heather Emehiser, and Bethany Emehiser, and their children. In addition, Greg is survived by his brother Gary West and sister Connie Parkins.

A celebration of life visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home – Northeast Chapel, 4219 Hardscrabble Road, Columbia, SC 29223.
