Harold Wayne Abrams, 81, of Decatur, Arkansas, departed this life on the morning of July 4, 2026. He was reunited with his first wife and the mother of their four children, Ina Delores Abrams, who preceded him in death.
Harold grew up in rural Arkansas and enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17 upon graduating from Carlisle High School. During his distinguished 23-year military career, Harold was stationed at installations in California, Michigan, Louisiana, South Dakota, Germany, Georgia, Australia, and Guam. He took pride in having served with the 9th Wing at Beale Air Force Base in the late 1960s, where he supported the historic SR-71 Blackbird missions. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Harold proudly maintained the F-4 Phantom fleet while stationed at Bien Hoa.
His military career provided his family the opportunity to experience many customs, cultures, music, art, and natural wonders from around the world—memories they will cherish forever. Harold received numerous awards, commendations, and medals recognizing his meritorious service and dedication to his country. He retired from active duty service in 1985 and moved his family to Columbia, South Carolina, where he continued his civil service to the nation at Fort Jackson for 8 years.
He was, as his family often affectionately said, truly "government issue," carrying the discipline, order, and sense of duty instilled by military service throughout the remainder of his life.
Outside of work, Harold had a beautiful singing voice and a deep appreciation for history. He had numerous classic cars and hot rods over the years, his favorite being his very own Bullitt - the 68 Ford Mustang Fastback. He loved western movies and television shows, and all things John Wayne. His favorite meal was prime rib. Although he did not get to enjoy it often, he never missed an opportunity to declare that nobody on Earth could make it better than the prime rib served at the NCO Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Abrams; his children, Lisa (Jorge) Campbell, Patrick (Amy) Abrams, Charles Abrams, and Jennifer (Matthew) White; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn (Ricky) Edge; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Rest now, Daddy. Until we see you again, know that we love you and will greatly miss your presence in our lives.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 am on July 20, 2026, at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Ave, Columbia, South Carolina 29201.
