

COLUMBIA - Mr. Harold “Pete” Price, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 3, 2013. He died peacefully at the Presbyterian Home in Lexington, SC after a long and valiant struggle with heart and lung disease. Pete was born in Bishopville, SC and moved to Winnsboro, SC as a child. At the age of 14, Pete met the love of his life, Ruth L. McClintock, and in 1951 they were married at Lebanon Presbyterian Church. Pete and Ruth moved to Columbia, SC as a young couple where they raised three adoring children, Harold, Marvin and his wife Wendy and Esther. Pete became known as “Pop” by his 7 grandchildren, Lindsay, Jordan, Austin, Reid, Brent, Heather and Kara and his 2 great-grandchildren, Aiden and Summer.
Pete was born on August 11, 1929. He was the oldest of 7 children born to Colon Joyce Price and Leila Mae Berry Price. He is survived by two sisters, Nita Murrin and Gayle Rose as well as two brothers, Wayne and Ronnie. He was preceded in death by his brother Wilburn and his sister, Wanda White. Pete is also predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth to whom he was married for 61 years.
Pete served for 35 years as both a Meter Readers and a Right-of-Way Agent for SCE&G (SCANA) where he met many of his friends with whom he enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing softball over the years. For over 60 years, Pete was an active member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer of the Zelma Richardson Adult Bible Class. He also served as the Sunday School Assistant Treasurer and the St. Andrews Cemetery Committee Chairman for over 43 years. In 1953, Pete organized Troop #23, the first Boy Scout Troop at the church. He may have been best remembered as the “Chief Coffee Maker and Candy Man” for the 8:30 Worship Service Coffee Crowd and for the youth of the church.
Pete will be remembered for having organized a group of 35 men known as “Mr. Turtle’s Wildlife and Marine Expedition”. This group of men enjoyed fellowship, fun and fishing together as a group since 1980. Pete loved children, “picking” on people he loved, the Atlanta Braves, the Clemson Tigers and having a good time. He lived by the Golden Rule of doing unto others as you would wish done unto you.
A celebration of Pete’s life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, July 6 at the Irmo/St. Andrews Caughman-Harman Funeral Home located at 5400 Bush River Road in Columbia, SC. The service will be held at that same location at 2:30 pm with interment taking place at the St. Andrews Lutheran Cemetery on St. Andrews Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or to the charity of their choice in Pete’s name.
