A graveside service for Mr. Herbert Durant Cooper, Sr., 90, will be held 10 o’clock, Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at Greenlawn Memorial Park with The Rev. Dan Griffin and The Rev. Chris Smith officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia.
Mr. Cooper was born on April 28, 1921 in Columbia, a son of the late Fay Boyd Cooper, Sr. and Alma Lilla Crumpton Cooper. He was retired from the Pargas Company. Mr. Cooper was a US Army veteran of WWII, a member of Dentsville Masonic Lodge # 398, and Harmony Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sons, Herbert D. (Cindy) Cooper, Jr., Gary P. (Rita) Cooper; daughters, Donna C. (Johnny) Kerr, Melanie A. (Britt) Dailey, all of Elgin; sisters, Melba (Bob) Smith of Hopkins, Neil Jenkins of Columbia; grandchildren, Melissa (Gil) Knott of Elgin, Douglas Broome of Charlotte, Durant Dailey, Pete Cooper, Jody (Nick) Holt, Ashleigh Dailey, Noah Dailey, all of Elgin; great grandchildren, Justin Knott of Elgin, and Hayden Holt of Columbia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Lila Mae Branham Cooper, as well as brothers, Rubin Bonner Cooper, Clyde Leroy Cooper, Fay Boyd Cooper, Jr., Edward Bell Cooper, AlonzoBenton Cooper; and sister, Dorothy Vera Cooper.
