IRMO – Funeral services for Hiram Phillip “H.P.” Johnston, 88, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2013, at Riverland Hills Baptist Church with a private entombment for the family in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chuck Maier, Chad Maier, Porter Tiller, Phillip Clapp, Michael Clyburn, Robert Clyburn, Brian Clyburn, and great-grandson, Nicholas Kirchner. Honorary pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Charles Maier and Ted Clyburn and great-grandson, Asher Maier.
Mr. Johnston was born January 30, 1925, in Sumter County and died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. He was the son of the late Charles Anthony Johnston and Veda Marguerite Rodgers Johnston. He worked in the insurance business for 46 years and was with Life Insurance Company of Georgia for 38 years as a sales agent, sales manager, training assistant and district manager. He began his insurance career in Sumter, SC. He was district manager in Spartanburg from 1960 to 1964 and district manager in Orangeburg for 25 years. He was a past president of the Orangeburg Life Underwriters Association, past president of the Orangeburg Kiwanis Club, member of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce and served on boards of the United Way and the Salvation Army. He was a mason and a member of a Masonic Lodge in Orangeburg. He was a past deacon and usher of Orangeburg First Baptist Church. Living in Irmo since 2001, he has been a member of and served as usher at Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
H.P. is survived by his wife, Esther Williams Johnston. They were married for 67 years. He is also survived by his three daughters, Sylvia Clyburn (Ted) of Lexington, Barbara Johnston of Columbia, and Phyllis Maier (Charles) of Columbia; two sisters, Lizzie Ward of Simpsonville, SC and Marguerite Congdon of Hopewell, VA; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, H.P. was predeceased by two sisters, Ruby Nesbitt and Mable Holloman Davis and a brother, Charles Samuel Johnston.
