
IRMO – John Wesley Hamby, Sr. passed peacefully into eternal life on Thursday, December 5, 2013. Born November 2, 1924 in Greenwood, SC, he was a son of the late W. A. and Annie Cobb Hamby.
John graduated from Wofford College, where he was elected student body president, and also attended USC Law School. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was employed by the James C. Greene Company for 58 years and rose to the level of company president before retiring. John served as president of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Irmo and Coed Sunday School Class V.
John Hamby was indeed a gentleman and modeled a life of respecting others. He balanced his strong work ethic with time spent with family. He excelled not only in his professional life, but also in his personal life as a devoted husband and beloved father and grandfather. He was respected and loved by all who knew him. He will be missed but not forgotten.
John is survived by his wife, Catherine; son, Jack Hamby and his wife Jo Ann; daughter, Linda Kirby and her husband Jim. Also surviving are grandsons, Eric Kirby and John Hamby III; granddaughters, Allison Bazen and Megan Spires and his great grandchildren, Charlotte, Allie, Savannah and Wesley. John is also survived by his beloved dog, Penny. John was preceded in death by his son, John W. Hamby, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at Caughman Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service.
