John Robert Hill

John Hill, 86 of Columbia, SC, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Lexington Medical Center. John was born on January 15, 1940 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Arkle) Hill. He graduated from Burlington High School, class of 1958. He earned a Bachelor of Art degree from Luther College in 1962. John was married to Barbara Ellen Van Ginkle on February 8, 1964 in Des Moines, Iowa.

John is survived by his daughter, Kim (Don) Deese; his grandchildren, John Deese, Tyler Deese, Kristina (David) Olson; great grandchildren, nieces and cousins.

John started his career with Goodyear in 1966 and then moved to Maytag Company where he met his wife, Barbara. John continued his path in sales with appliance sales then moved into the furniture business. John operated J.R. Hill and Associate, LLC, as a Furniture Manufacturer’s Representative. John loved entertaining and spending time with family and friends. John was very proud of his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marilyn McFarland; and wife, Barbara Hill.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170.
