WHITE ROCK – Dr. John L. Yost, Jr. died on February 17, 2014 in White Rock, SC at the age of 92. He was born to the Rev. Dr. John L. Yost, Sr. and Eva Dunning Yost at Bear Poplar, NC. Dr. Yost was predeceased by his wife Kathryn Sue Caughman Yost after 60 years of marriage. Surviving children are the Rev. John L. Yost, III (Brenda) of Simpsonville, SC., Susan Yost Bonner (Michael) of New Bern, NC, and the Rev. Carl R. Yost (Debra) of Savannah, GA; a sister, Elizabeth Yost Whitworth of Columbia. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.
Dr. Yost received degrees from Newberry College, A. B. 1943; Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, B. D. 1945; Lenior-Rhyne University, D. D. 1964. He was ordained into the Lutheran Church by the Georgia-Alabama Synod in 1945.
Pastor Yost served the following congregations: Holy Trinity, Lynchburg, VA; St. Paul’s, Savannah, GA; Haven, Salisbury, NC; Holy Trinity, Hickory, NC; St. Matthews, Charleston, SC. He also served as Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the United Lutheran Church in America. Other service in the church includes NC Synod Operational Committee; Executive Board – NC Synod; Board of World Missions (LCA); 5 times delegate to church wide convention of LCA; Executive Council – LCA; Executive Board and Dean of the SC Synod; Newberry College- Chairman of the Board; and a delegate for the Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Tanzania, Africa.
Visitation will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1715 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201 on Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 9:30 – 11:15 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am with Bishop Herman Yoos and Pastor Tony Metze officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Newberry College or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Columbia.
