Josefina, better known as Josie, was born in 1939 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, to parents Eugenia Martinez and José Osorio. Since her early life, Josie was a go-getter. She was always looking for the next best business opportunity. She built a beautiful home in Puerto Rico, where her daughter, Mirna, lives today. She had several rental properties, owned and managed a nursing home, had a food-truck, and did alterations, all while she raised her two daughters as a single mom. Josie also enjoyed farming and raised pigs and chicken; and cultivated bananas, plantains and many vegetables and legumes, which she sold for profit. In 1998, Josie moved to Virginia to help her daughter, Jakara, raise her granddaughter while Jakara pursued a military career as an U.S. Army Officer. It was then that Josie secured a job as a housekeeper at Fort Eustis Army Lodging. Soon thereafter, Josie met and married José Godoy. In 2017, both Josie and Jakara retired from their respective careers and the family moved to Columbia, S.C. where Josie purchased her retirement home. In Columbia, she went to school, baked apple pies, cakes, bread pudding; grew a bountiful garden; and raised chickens. Josie, at 82, had an insatiable desire to learn different skills and improve her English. This led her to continue going to school every Tuesday thru Thursday.
Josie was a devout Catholic. At 14, she began working with the Opus Dei nuns preparing the church for mass while earning money to help her family. At age 20, Josie fully entered the Opus Dei, moving to Chicago, IL where she studied Catholicism and became the person she was today: hardworking, perfectionist, and a devout Catholic to the Lord and the Virgin Marie. In the Opus Dei, Josie practiced whatever trade she was asked to do, from sweeping, ironing, cooking, singing, fixing windows, painting… she said her title was Handyman. At 27, Josie left the Opus Dei and returned to her parents' home. Since her return, Josie continued to pray the rosary daily and was active in the Church. Josie was a member of several church choirs, including St. John Neumann, Catholic Church in Columbia, S.C.
She is survived by her husband, José Godoy, and daughters, Jakara and Mirna. She also leaves her grandchildren, Grace, Rafael and Eduardo, and great-granddaughter, Sofializ.
A memorial service will be hosted to honor Josie’s life on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at 7:00 PM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 100 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223.
