COLUMBIA Memorial service for Sergeant Major Juan Gerardo Lujan-Rios, 63, will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, with a reception to follow at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, is assisting the family. Sgt. Major Lujan-Rios passed away peacefully in his Lake Carolina Columbia home in his bed on Saturday, December 22, 2018, with family by his side. Having said his goodbyes after a hard fought 14 month battle to a relentless cancer - today he dances in heaven and we forever celebrate his life. He was the son of the late Luis Lujan Byron & Ana Lujan-Rios, both of San Juan, PR. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Nunez Lujan; daughters, Ursula Lujan Moore and Viviana Lujan; grandchildren, Kristopher, Antonio, Julianna, Sebastian, Brandon; siblings, Luis Lujan II, Ana Julia Lujan Ramos and Jose Enrique Lujan. A 34 year U.S. Army veteran, Juan traveled the world serving and leading many brave men and women defending our nation’s best interests. Juan was stationed in Korea, Germany and across the U.S., ultimately landing his family in Columbia, South Carolina near Fort Jackson. He loved his peers and his family deeply and reminded them often. He gave unselfishly and unconditionally. He grew up surfing and fishing and let go of these loves. Juan enjoyed golfing and spending time with friends and family. Music was also his passion and he was always ready to dance and celebrate life. Juan loved the beach and that is where he most felt at home. Everyone will attest to the abundance of laughter in his presence. Juan’s network spread across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Those who knew him best knew he was full of life, welcoming each and every day with gratitude and love. Juan always gave thanks to God for his blessings and his legacy will march on for many years to come. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or stjude.org.

The words are difficult- I truly have never met anyone like him. He was the happiest and positive man, singing and dancing all the time. He never showed any negative behavior. One of my all time favorites....he will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family.
