

IRMO - Funeral service for Lawrence Whitlock, 98, of Irmo will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel on old Bush River Road on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.prior to the service.
Mr. Whitlock was born on January 5, 1916 in Edinburg, Indiana and passed away on January 16, 2014 in Irmo, SC. During WWII, he served his country on a ship in the US Navy on board a minesweeper in the Pacific. Mr. Whitlock was a Civil Service Firefighter and retired as Fire Chief at Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus Indiana. He graduated from the Lowry Air Force Base Fire Fighting Academy in Denver Colorado and Texas A&M in College Station Texas. He taught fire prevention to 100’s of groups and he accepted many awards on behalf of the air base. He and his wife Mary who spent 73 years together in marriage before her death in 2012 owned a real estate brokerage and home building business in Indiana prior to their retirement. They moved to Roswell, GA to be closer to their children and grandchildren in 1974. They were founding members of Northbrook United Methodist Church in Roswell and Mr. Whitlock was a member until his death. They lived in Irmo in the latter years with his daughter. During retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife and his two hobbies, playing the organ and tinkering in electronics.
Mr. Whitlock is survived by his children, Joy Downs of Irmo, Dan Whitlock of Roswell, GA; daughter-in-law, Gloria; grandchildren, Jay Downs(Anne), Randy Downs (Charlsie), Brian Whitlock (Beth) and Daren Whitlock (Christina); great grandchildren, Scott Downs (Sarah), Jon Downs, Casey Downs, Jake Downs and Amy Whitlock.
