Born and raised in Virginia, she lived a life marked by grace, curiosity, independence and a deep affection for adventure and home.
She and her husband, Richard, found their greatest joy traveling. Their journeys carried them throughout the East Coast aboard their cherished sailboat, Phalarope. Later, they continued traveling across America in their Airstream "The Buggy".
A librarian by profession, she served at Hanahan High, Trident Technical College, and concluded her professional life as Chief Librarian for the Post and Courier in Charleston, SC.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Manning; her children, Mary Lawrence Crockett of Columbia, SC; Robert G. Crockett (Harriett) of Gloucester, VA; Stuart Crockett Akins (Randy) of Aiken, SC; and W. Tyler Crockett (Deirdre) of Columbia, SC. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: William M. Crockett of Gloucester, VA; Andrew G. Crockett (Elizabeth) of Jupiter, FL; and Annika R. Akins (Daniel) of Rock Hill, SC.
She was preceded in death by her parents, who made her life bright and beautiful; her brother, William; her former husband, Ray V. Crockett; and her faithful companion, Chester, and the many pets that brought her joy.
She will be remembered as a gracious and spirited woman—an adventurer, and a lover of books and the sea.
Those wishing to honor Mary’s memory may make a memorial contribution to the Congaree Land Trust.
