Nancy Barnett Hyman Riggs, a cherished wife, devoted mother, loving daughter, caring sister, and beloved friend, peacefully passed away on March 14, 2024, at the age of 62. Born in Austin, Texas, on November 27, 1961, Nancy was the daughter of Dr. Emmala Evins Barnett and the late Dr. Charles D. Barnett of Columbia, S.C.
Throughout her life, Nancy epitomized dedication, compassion, and unconditional love for her family, patients, and community. She earned her undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University and pursued her passion for helping others by obtaining her MSW from the University of South Carolina. She was a Licensed Independent Social Worker. With a career spanning over 25 years, Nancy touched countless lives with her empathy and expertise. In her professional biography, she stated, “I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. Taking the first step to seek a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.” In addition to her professional endeavors, Nancy devoted herself to serving her community. She initiated a food pantry at her local church and selflessly volunteered her time and expertise on numerous church mission trips to Nicaragua where she volunteered in an orphanage for girls.
Nancy is survived by her devoted husband, Walter M. Riggs of Columbia, S.C.; her loving children, Cara Nicole and Emmala Hyman from her marriage to Harry Hyman; her stepson, Kevin W. Riggs; her mother, Dr. Emmala Barnett-Hunt and stepfather, Will Hunt, residing in Columbia, S.C; and sisters, Patricia Barnett McLendon of Randolph, VT and Dr. Laura Barnett- Queen of Columbia, S.C.
A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Woodridge Memorial Park located at 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, Stepping Stones Ministry, Sistercare, Congaree Riverkeeper or the charity of one’s choice in honor of Nancy’s lifelong commitment to helping others.
Nancy will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May her spirit continue to inspire us all to live with compassion, grace, and unwavering love.
