

Alan Bruce Pickett, D.D.S, age 79, resident of Columbus, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 11 a.m., in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends in the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby immediately following the service until 1 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at Main Post Cemetery, Fort Benning, Georgia. Dr. Pickett, son of the late John Harvey Pickett and Audrey Weber Pickett, was born June 13, 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Pickett graduated with a Bachelors of Science from University of Massachusetts in 1958 and proudly attained his United States Citizenship in 1960. After his undergraduate education, he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from Tufts University in 1962 and was subsequently appointed as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. During his early military service, Dr. Pickett served as Dental Officer and Clinic Chief during tours in the United States, Germany and Korea. In 1976, Dr. Pickett received his Masters Degree in Special Studies from George Washington University, became Board Certified in Oral Medicine and was assigned as Chief, Oral Medicine, Pathology at Fort Benning, Georgia. His career with the military culminated with obtaining his Board Certification in Oral Pathology and becoming the Chief of the Department of Hard Tissue Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. In 1985, Dr. Pickett retired and returned to Columbus, GA. During his retirement years, Dr. Pickett enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and doting on his loving grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother Audrey; his loving wife, Irene Jessica Pickett; son, Alan John Pickett and his wife Ann; daughter, Karen Alaine Webb; sister, Linda and her husband Dr. James Kelley; his sister-in-law, Joy Dalton, whose husband William is deceased; and his grandchildren, John Dalton Pickett, Kailyn Jessica Webb, and Samuel Hays Webb.
