

Ann Helms, died December 20, 2016 in Columbus, Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Columbus, on Thursday, December 29, 2016 with Reverend Cynthia Garrard, Associate Pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Miss Helms was born in Talbotton, Georgia on June 9, 1930 to Emmette R. Helms and Mae Parker Helms. She graduated from Talbotton High School, attended Georgia Southwestern and received her BS from Georgia College and University in Milledgeville. She received her Master’s and Sixth-Year certification from Auburn University and took additional certification classes at the University of Georgia. Miss Helms taught in Harris County, Talbot County, at Trinity School in Columbus, and retired from the Muscogee County School District, Columbus, Georgia, where she served as a teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary School, Elementary Math Consultant for the MDSD and Principal of Clubview Elementary School. Following retirement from the MCSD in 1995, Miss Helms supervised interns enrolled at Troy University-Phenix City and Columbus State University.
Miss Helms was a member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathamatics and several other organizations.
Miss Helms is survived by her niece, Marianne Ethridge (Jim) of Columbus, GA.; nephews, James Avera of Waverly Hall, GA., David Helms of Chattanooga, TN.; and niece, Cindy Hurley (Gene) of Seymour, TN.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, Columbus, GA., with a private family burial in Talbotton, GA. Flowers are appreciated but contributions should be made to PAWS Humane Society.
