Archibald Johnston Caldwell, III, age 86 of Columbus, GA passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Piedmont - Midtown Hospital, Columbus, GA. Born January 4, 1937 in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, lived in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack, and grew up in Nicoma Park, Oklahoma.
A proud United States Army Veteran (1957-1977) 82nd Airborne and served in Vietnam as Platoon Sergeant, Mortar Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary in 1966.
Completed Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning in 1967, and served as Commander of Delta Company 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1969.
Worked on Fort Benning in Force Modernization and Range Control Division (1985-2017).
He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting both rifle and archery, and gardening. Active in supporting his sons’ high school football teams. Played football in high school and during his service in the army, and was an avid football fan. He achieved his lifetime goal of marrying his grade school sweetheart, being a career soldier in the US Army, and having a family.
Survivors include, his wife, Phoebe Carole Caldwell nee Barnes; his children, Archibald Johnston Caldwell IV, Lynna Fern Spencer, and Charles Augustus Carr Caldwell; and his grandchildren, Spencer (Devina) Braun, Allison Jane Caldwell, Ruby Kyle Spencer, Gardiner Spencer, Nicholas Alexander Caldwell, Benjamin Thomas Caldwell, and Abigail Grace Caldwell.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907 on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 10:30AM. Family will visit with friends on Thursday from 9:30-10:30AM. Burial will be held at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, 553 Highway 165, Fort Mitchell, AL 36856 on Thursday afternoon at 1:30PM.
