Columbus, Georgia- Arthur A. Durante, Jr., age 64, died on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at his home in Columbus. Visitation for friends and family will be held at the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012, 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, with Reverend C.A. Mangham officiating.
Mr. Durante, son of the late Arthur A. Durante, Sr. and Ethel Jean Mangham Durante, was born February 2, 1948 in Carthage, TX. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving honorably for a combined 34 years on active duty and in the Alabama Army National Guard. During his distinguished military career, he held many top level positions, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal (w/4OLC); Army Achievement Medal; Expert Infantryman's Badge; and Senior Parachutist's Badge. Mr. Durante was also employed by the U.S. Civil Service where he dedicated more than 27 years of his life, retiring in September 2010 as Deputy Chief of Doctrine, U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA. While serving at Fort Benning, he was awarded the Dept of Army Commander's Award for Civil Service in 1993, 1996, and 2003. Mr. Durante was Methodist by faith and enjoyed spending his free time at the Muscogee Long Rifles blackpowder shooting club.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Byron Lee Durante. Mr. Durante is survived by his wife of 38 years, Anne Durante of Columbus; two sons, David Durante and his wife Danielle of Georgetown, TX and Craig Durante and his wife Carrie of Ringgold, GA; sister, Toni Jean Johnson and her husband Eddie of Savannah, GA; granddaughter, Meghan Durante of Georgetown, TX; uncle, C.A. Mangham and his wife Gloria of Cranfills Gap, TX; sister-in-law and her son, Angel Durante and Robert Durante of Houston, TX; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
