

Ashby Benjamin Moon, Jr., 89, of Columbus, Georgia passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Orchard View Nursing Home. Funeral Service is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2015, 11:00 AM at Wynnton United Methodist Church with Dr. Frank Parr officiating. A private interment will follow. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:30 PM -7:30 PM in the St. Elmo Room of Sriffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road.
Mr. Moon, son of the late Ashby Benjamin Moon, Sr. and Mabel Randall Moon, was born March 21, 1926 in Columbus, GA. He was a Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor with Moon, Meeks, Mason and Vinson, Inc. for 65 years. Mr. Moon served with the U.S. Maritime Service during WWII in Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterrean. Also, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Moon was a graduate of Columbus High School and Clemson Agricultural College (now Clemson University), with high honors. Mr. Moon was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi. He was a charter member of Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus with over 50 years of perfect attendance. Past President and Life Member of Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce (now Jaycees); former Chairman Columbus Airport Authority; former Board Chairman of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association; former Captain of Columbus Quarterback Club; former Director of Columbus Chamber of Commerce; former Director and organizer of Columbus Hospice; member of Association of the United States Army; Life Member of American Society of Civil Engineers; member of Georgia and Alabama Societies of Professional Land Surveyors, and at the time of his death, he held the oldest active Land Surveyors License in Georgia. He was a member of the Chattahoochee River Club and Green Island Country Club. He was a member of Wynnton United Methodist Church, the Goodwill Sunday School class and served over 40 years as Usher-in-Chief, then became Captain Emeritus.
Mr. Moon enjoyed attending the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, shows at the Springer Opera House and at the River Center of Performing Arts Center. He also enjoyed watching college football, basketball and baseball games. Mr. Moon attended Auburn home football games for over 40 years. He loved watching his granddaughters play soccer and volleyball.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John M. Bush and sister, Patricia M. Sharpless. Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Shirley Bruce Moon; daughter, Melinda Ward (Ron) of Columbus, GA; granddaughters, Mary Ashby Ward and Catherine Howard Ward of Columbus; brother, John R. “Pete” Moon of Savannah; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
