Avis D. Ragan

December 11, 1925September 14, 2020

Avis Ragan, 94 years old, died on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Signature Healthcare, Marietta, Georgia. A private burial will take place at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Avis was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Lawrence and Gladys Krieser Lemke. She met her husband Roe E. Ragan while he was in the U.S. Navy stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station near Chicago, Illinois. After Roe’s retirement from civil service, they travelled around the country in their RV, enjoying many sights and making new friends. They were married 47 ½ years and had four children. Avis was a homemaker and had served in many capacities in her church, Edgewood Baptist, since its beginning. She had also volunteered as a Pink Lady at St. Francis Hospital for many years. Her kindness and consideration were often seen not only by her relatives and friends, but also by complete strangers that she met. “What a sweet lady” was the usual description describing Avis Ragan.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved Aunt Dolly, her husband Roe Ragan, her daughter Hedy McDowell (Rich) and her grandson Dan Ragan (Lacy).

Surviving Avis are three sons: Greg (Martha) Ragan, Steve (Pamela) Ragan and Wayne (Roni) Ragan; seven grandchildren: Matt Ragan (Shelly), Todd McDowell (Jennifer), Maria McDowell Brown (Rob), Jeff Ragan (Patricia), Laurie Ragan Cugino (Michael), Jennifer Ragan Eckols (Jason), Amy Ragan McDowell (Scott); thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ella Will Ragan Fellows of Edison Georgia, Vivian Ragan Colwell of Columbus, Georgia and several nieces and nephews-in-law.

Mrs. Avis was one of my favorite people when I was working at Edgewood Baptist. She had a contagious laugh that she shared. She smiled and always had a kind word. Condolences to her family.

I have known this precious lady most all of my life. She was my Sunday School teacher when I was just a little girl. She always greeted me with the biggest smile and best hug every time I saw her throughout the years at Edgewood.
Prayers for the family during this time.

Avis was always so kind and gracious to me! On two different occasions I had the privilege of being the interim director of the senior adult choir in which she sang. She was a very good alto and a wonderful
choir member! She was just such fun to be with! I count it a privilege to have known her!!
Blessings on all of you as you make the adjustment to her being with the Lord!

Mrs. Avis was in my choir at Covenant Woods. She sang in several musicals with us....and WHAT a voice! She even had a solo in one musical, and did a fantastic job. Such a sweet, kind spirit. Loved by all...and singing in that heavenly choir now 💜 RIP sweet Avis!

Mrs. Ragan was one of my favorite older ladies at Edgewood. When we first came in 1977 & I began singing in the alto section, she was one of the few but she had a sweet voice to match her spirit. She cried as easily as I did which made me comfortable sharing my feelings, trials & victories. I looked for her at Covenant Woods when our kids choirs would go sing there & she always had the same, sweet smile. I will miss her but SO THANKFUL our separation is only temporary.

I have sweet memories of the years in Columbus and member of Edgewood Baptist Church. Avis was a Sunday School teacher for both my girls and oh how she loved children. I also enjoyed knowing Avis in the adult choir and her beautiful alto voice. She always had a smile and a good word for everyone. I don't know if Wayne will remember spending time in our home on College Ave and playing guitar with John Talburt. Again, sweet memories. I talked with Avis after she went into the nursing facility, but not really sure if she remembered me although she was happy to hear from me. It was the same Avis voice when she answered the phone. God bless and give you peace.
