Bessie Bacon passed peacefully on Sunday morning, September 12th. Bessie was one of the sweetest, most faithful and loving of all God’s children. She was a long-term member of Porter Memorial Baptist church where she was very active in numerous ministries.
She moved to Columbus from Slocomb, Alabama with her sister, Kathleen in 1941 joining their sister Grace. The day after her arrival in Columbus Bessie was hired at the Bibb Mill, first in the spinning room and soon thereafter transferred to the office where she worked for the next 43 years. It was there she met her husband, Roy.
Bessie loved living in Bibb City and her neighbors loved her. Her affection for her community led to her election as a Bibb City Council member. Her favorite past time was sitting on her porch greeting those who passed by and when asked was “a font of information about what the Bibb Mill was like… what these mill communities were in the fabric of the South. Just to sit at her feet and listen is miraculous” commented Rick McKnight, past President of the Bibb Village Association. She was affectionately known by her neighbors and friends as the “Queen of Bibb City.”
Bessie’s greatest joy in life was her family – most especially her devoted son, Bruce, his wife Angie, granddaughters Beth Anne Kennedy (David), Ellen Cobb (Greg ) and her three precious grandchildren, Lucas, Lillian and Logan. She was thrilled to learn that she had another grandchild on the way. They completed her life and she loved them with her whole being. Bessie is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and Roy’s grandchildren whom she loved as her own.
It’s so hard on this side of heaven to lose one we love so much, but we are sustained by Bessie’s deep faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We know she was welcomed into his loving embrace with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” She will be forever in our hearts and for her life and love, we thank God.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Striffler Hamby in Columbus, Georgia, at 11:00 a.m. A private burial, attended by the family, will be held in advance. The family will receive guests after the service under the portico at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bessie may be made to Columbus Hospice, West Central Georgia Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or Mercy Med in Columbus GA.
