Betty Smith Chancey, 96, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on June 7, 2026. She was a lifelong resident of Columbus. Betty was born on December 15, 1929 to the late Mildred Clark Smith and Lawrence Clyde Smith, Sr. She was a Jordan Vocational High School “Red Jackets” graduate. Betty was a majorette with the Red Jackets. After high school she married the late J. Wyatt Chancey and together they called Columbus home where she worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield as an office assistant. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family dearly. Betty was Christian by faith; she was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and she was known for her pound cakes which she shared with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Lawrence Smith; her husband J. Wyatt Chancey; and her brother, Lawrence Clyde Smith, Jr. Betty leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her daughter, Kim Dean; her beloved grandchildren: Rodney McCoy and Julie Davis; and her very adored great-grandchildren: Shaun McCoy, Jon Wyatt Davis, and Brianna Agbay; her very loving nieces Vicki Hughes and Cathy Sims.
Visitation for Betty’s Family and Friends will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in the St. Elmo Room, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907, on June 10, 2026, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Family and friends will go in procession from Striffler-Hamby into Parkhill Cemetery after the visitation. A Graveside Service will follow the visitation in Parkhill Cemetery at 11:00 am with Pastor Jason Coombes officiating.
