Billy Dale McGee

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. in The Church of The Holy Family with Father Dan O’Connell officiating. Burial will be in Parkhill Cemetery. A Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2016 at the funeral home with a visitation to follow until 7:00 p.m. according to Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Road Columbus, GA 31907. The grandsons will be pallbearers.

Mr. McGee was born August 10, 1937 in Montgomery, AL the son of John Nile and Vertie Lowe McGee. He had been a resident of Columbus since 1964, was a graduate of The University of Alabama and retired as a History professor at Columbus State University where he received Distinguished Professor of the Year Award. He also served as Athletic Director for several years and was inducted into the Columbus State Hall of Fame for his leadership. He was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church for 52 years. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. Billy will be remembered for his wit, optimistic view of life, his addictive smile, and his generous heart. Especially endearing were the nicknames granted to those who held his greatest affection. He was a devoted father and friend and always placed himself second. Among some of the things he loved and cherished were beautiful sunsets in Gulf Shores and the Alabama Crimson Tide, but most of all his beloved family. He is dearly missed by his loved ones and numerous friends who celebrate the fact that he is now at peace.

Mr. McGee was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Charles Pinkston McGee and his daughter, Philippa McGee Brown.

Survivors include his daughter, Jane McGee Pair and her husband, Kent of Midland, Ga., and son in law, Neal Brown of Hamilton, Ga. Five grandchildren; Bryant Pair, John Pair, Christopher Brown, Thomas Brown and Kathleen Brown; One great grandchild, Mack Pair.
