Scott was an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Columbus State University (CSU) for 17 years in the English Department.
He was a beloved member of the English Department, where he taught composition, literature, and creative writing. A highly accomplished writer, Dr. Wilkerson published books of poetry, fiction, and drama and wrote the libretti for several successful operas, including Eddie’s Stone Song, Odyssey of the First Pasaquoyan: An Opera in One Act about Eddie Owens Martin, the creator of Pasaquan; and for an operatic adaptation of Carson McCullers’s The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, a staged reading of which is to be performed at Mallarmé Music in Durham, North Carolina, on August 3. His plays were performed in Georgia, California, New York, Oregon, and at a number of venues in Germany.
Scott received Columbus State’s Creative Endeavors Award in 2018 and an Outstanding Teacher of Writing Award in 2017. He was nominated for the Pushcart Prize on two occasions and for the Georgia Author of the Year Award in 2022. Dr. Wilkerson held a B.A. in English from Auburn University, an M.A. in English from Auburn University at Montgomery, an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte, and a Ph.D in Creative Writing from Georgia State University. Scott will be remembered by his students and colleagues as one of the kindest and most supportive and collegial members of the Columbus State community.
Scott is survived by his loving wife, Tara; his loving mother, Candace who is missing her Scott's calls; bonus dad, Jim Davenport; sweet sister, Angel Quinton (Billy Bob) who he loved and adored; his brother in-law Brandon Green (Bonnie); his sister in-law, Whitney Jones (Matt); his loving nephews, Will Quinton (Scott’s mini me), James Green and Jamerson Jones; loving nieces, Arie Antonio, Abby Green, Amelia Green (Bean) and Kathryn Jones; as well as countless cousins, friends, colleagues and church members.
This also includes his fur babies, Dash, Emma and Jazzy, who he loved and got many miles walking.
He is preceded in death by his father, Carey Wilkerson; his father in-law, Capt. Gene Hull; and his mother in-law, Kathy Hull.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Edgewood Hall, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907 on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 4:00 PM with Bro. Ron Shephard officiating service. Family will receive visitors an hour prior and after the service in the Mill Room, and they will be given the opportunity to share Scott stories.
Flowers are welcome; however, one can read a book in honor of Scott or one that he has published.
