Caryl Louise Brookins, age 90, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018. Caryl was born December 18, 1927, in Monessen, Pennsylvania to Alberta Johnson Schoaf and Clarence L Schoaf. Caryl lived her life in service of others. In her earlier years, Caryl joined the Air Force as a Flight Nurse and served her country during the Korean Conflict. When she left the Air Force, she continued her nursing career, working for the Columbus area hospitals, and subsequently worked as a Private Duty Nurse. Caryl retired at the young age of 75. Caryl was a great provider, and through her example, taught her children to be independent, responsible, have good manners and to appreciate the value of an education. Caryl was an avid reader who enjoyed traveling, playing cards, walking, and swimming. She loved laughing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing with her cat, and she loved a good joke. Caryl will always be remembered for her military service, for her nursing career, and for being a great Mom and friend.
A visitation for family and friends for Caryl will be held Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, GA 31907. A Celebration of Caryl's Life will follow from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The burial will be at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907.
Caryl was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, William Schoaf. She is survived by: sons, Milton Kent Brookins and Scott Brookins (Marian); daughters, Shirley Ann Brookins Eller (Bob) and Rebecca Ann Parnell (Craig); grandchildren, Brittany Parnell Yokley (Chris), Lani Parnell Marsh (Andrew), Trent Parnell, Tyler Brookins, and Makenzie Brookins; great grandchildren, Jase Allen Marsh, and Rylee Ann Marsh; lifelong neighbor and best-friend Jeanette Ellis, special friends Virginia Mitchell and Barbara Knight, many friends at Riverplace Retirement Community, and her beloved cat, Sweetie.
