Born to Lester P. and Marion M. Hanneman on the family farm in Westpoint Township, Columbia Co, Wisc. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Juanita and Ann, his brothers Harold and Les, first wife Elaine (Forbes), son Karl, stepson Burleigh (Kelsea) and grandson Josh.
Charles is survived by his wife Minnie, stepdaughter, Helen (Rusty) Hurst, daughter, Katherine Martinez and son Kevin (Jeanne); grandchildren, Kelston, Stacey, Tyler, Tonya, Amber, Brandon, Allison and Alexander, great grandchildren Kayla, Cody, Hannah, Jacob, Ryan, Arizona and Roman, and a great great granddaughter, Kelsea.
Charles retired from the US Army in 1974 as a Master Sergeant; having served in Thailand, with the 1st Cav in Vietnam and Sinop Turkey. He was awarded
The National Defense Service Medal, W/OLC, Good Conduct Medal 5th Award, Vietnam Service Medal W/3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, Meritorious Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal
W/1 OLC.
His one love was officiating sports at all levels from Pee-wee football to Ivy League football while stationed on recruiting duty in New Hampshire. He loved doing baseball which included umpiring state tournament games in Georgia and in New Hampshire. He was a substitute umpire for the old 2A Sally League while stationed at Ft. Benning in the 70's. While attending Columbus College he had the honor of umpiring their baseball games. Charles' officiating spanned 39 years, giving it up at age 68 due to leg problems. He claimed to be a "half fast chef" because anyone could be a "half fast cook". Charles was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, active in many ministries that included Friends Who Care, The Altar Society, Adoration, The Elijah Cup, Prime Timers, and St. Anne Outreach. He served as an usher ànd Altar server. He received the Gartland Award for his years of service to the parish and community and was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church - 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus GA, on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 11:30 with Father Scott Winchel officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. A Rosary will be said at 6:00 pm on Friday, March 17 at the funeral home with visitation to follow until 7:30. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. No flowers, please.
