Charles R. Swann, age 89, of Columbus, GA, passed away on December 12, 2019. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at 11:00 am at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary; the family will visit with friends one hour prior to services.
Charles was born on October 12, 1930, in LaGrange, GA the son of Homer Goodwin Swann, Sr. and Annie Maude Bennett Swann. He grew up in the greater Columbus area and graduated from Waverly Hall High School. Shortly after graduation, Charles joined the U.S. Navy on June 11, 1948 and became a radioman on the USS Manchester CL-83 during the Korean War.
During this time, he courted his High School Sweetheart, who became his wife, Charlotte Ann “Tootsie” McCullohs; they were married in Pine Mountain, GA on August 30, 1951. Together they had three daughters, Carol Goodman, Virginia Payne, and Ellen Berarducci. He then became a Switchman for CSX railroad, until his retirement.
Charles R. Swann was a man of God and a strong spiritual leader in his family and in his church; he taught Sunday School for 30 years and was a faithful member of Northside Christian Church. He was a proud Brother of the Mount Herman Masonic Lodge in Columbus.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann “Tootsie” McCullohs; his parents, Homer G. and Annie Swann; sister, Jeanette Colquitt; brother, Homer Swann Jr.; brother-in-laws: Lee Wadsworth and Billy Colquitt Sr. and son-in-law, Eddie Goodman.
Survivors include his three daughters, Carol Goodman, Virginia (Allen) Payne, Ellen Berarducci; sister, Martha Wadsworth; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Fond memories and condolences may be shared with the Swann family at www.shcolumbus.com.
