

Clayton Sawyer, Sr. September 13, 1932 - July 20, 2009 COLUMBUS, GA—1SG (Ret.) Clayton Sawyer, Sr., 76, of Columbus died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Columbus Hospice House. The graveside funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009 in Parkhill Cemetery with Reverend Jay Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, July 22, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. 1SG (Ret.) Sawyer was born September 13, 1932 in Samson, AL to the late Alto and Eunice Odom Sawyer. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1978 after a distinguished military career serving in Korea and Vietnam. 1SG (Ret.) was proud of serving with the Green Berets, Special Forces, and Airborne. He was commander of the Royal Rangers at Riverview Assembly of God and a current member of Solid Rock Assembly of God. We will remember his passion for his family and his diligence. 1SG (Ret.) will also be remembered for being a man of integrity, excellence, and admirable character. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Sawyer. Survivors include his loving wife, Betty June Sawyer of Columbus; one daughter, Lydia Westcott and her husband, Harry of Columbus; one son, Clayton Sawyer, Jr. and his wife, Kara of Huntsville, AL; four grandchildren, Mark Westcott and his wife, Lauren, Ellen Westcott Rowley and her husband, Jeff, Matthew Westcott, and Caroline Sawyer; four great grandchildren, Jessica, Aiden, and Ethan Rowley, and Findlay Westcott; four sisters, Jeanette Schnek, Shirley Deadwyler, Diane Modling, and Betty Sawyer; numerous nieces and nephews.
