David’s life was marked by steadfast commitment to learning and service. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State university in 1970, a master’s degree from Georgia State university in 1975, and a PhD from University of Utah in 1983—achievements that reflected a disciplined mind and a deep respect for knowledge.
He served in the US Army for 26 years, rising to the rank of Army Colonel/ Infantry. His long military career stood as a testament to duty, leadership, and faithful dedication to those he served alongside.
David was married to Susan Doherty White for 55 years. Together they built a life grounded in enduring devotion and family.
In quieter moments, David found joy and meaning in travel, reading, history, gardening, and viticulture—interests that spoke to his curiosity, patience, and appreciation for both the wider world and the steady work of cultivating what grows over time.
He was a member at St. Anne's Catholic Church for 34 years, David served as a Lector, offering his time in reverent service and bringing care and clarity to a role rooted in faith and community.
David is survived by his wife Susan White; his sons Christopher White (Denna) and Scott White (Raquel); and his grandchildren, Andrew White, Emma White, Abigail White, William White, Riley White, Kaela White, and Ella White. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas S. White.
A Rosary will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary - Columbus, Fisher Chapel, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907, on September 20, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St Anne Catholic Church, 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus, Georgia 31907, on September 21, 2026, at 10:00 am.
Burial will take place at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, 553 AL Highway-165, Fort Mitchell, AL, on September 21, 2026, at 12:30 pm.
