Daniel John Mudge Sr., 81, of Columbus, GA, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 14th, 2021. A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM at St. Anne Catholic Church on July 24th in the Commons area, followed by funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will held at Parkhill Cemetery following Mass.
Dan was born on January 15th, 1940 to the late Paul Riley Mudge and Margaret Bellsnyder Mudge in Birmingham, Alabama. Dan graduated from Marist High School in Atlanta, GA in 1959, and received a football scholarship to play at Mississippi State, before transferring to Samford University in Birmingham, AL to play under Head Coach Bobby Bowden. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science.
He retired from Columbus Foundry as a Plant Superintendent, capping a 50-year career in the Foundry business.
Dan proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for 4 years. Dan was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Columbus, GA, and 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1019. He was also a member of the Marine Corps Detachment League #1402. Dan was an avid golfer, a huge fan of Auburn Football, and will be remembered as a kind and loving man by all who knew him, and took great pride in being a loving husband and father.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Becky Mudge, his brother Michael R. Mudge, and his sister Margaret Vaughn.
Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife Maria Elizabeth Rerrick, his brother Paul T. Mudge of Atlanta, GA, his son Daniel John Mudge Jr. (and wife Prissy) of Columbus, GA, his daughter Rebecca Danielle Mitchell (and husband Tripp) of Columbus, GA, grandchildren including Daniel John Mudge III, Rebecca Ann Mitchell, Hampton Mitchell, Morgan McCann, and Collin McCann.
He will be missed by his stepchildren Matthew Kirby and his wife Victoria of Manchester, NH (and their children Averie and Maya,) Laura Haver and her husband Rob of Macon, GA (and their children Ashton and Ella Grace,) Ethan Kirby and his wife Sarah of Maineville, OH (and their children Cole, Madelyn, Dylan, and Finn,) and many nieces and nephews.
Donations in Dan’s memory can be made to St. Anne Catholic Church in Columbus, GA, and/or Marist School in Atlanta, GA.
