Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 11:00 am at Wynnbrook Baptist Church 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, Georgia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be private, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Columbus.
Mr. Calhoun was born in Macon, Georgia, the son of Obie D. and Aileene Johnson Calhoun. He moved to Columbus in 1941 and attended Wynnton Grammar School. He graduated from Columbus High, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged as a First Lieutenant.
Most of his business career was in the financial industry. He was the President of Home Federal Savings & Loan, and later was the founding President of First Columbus Community Bank. He also served as interim President of Regions Bank and retired as Executive Vice President of Columbus Community Bank.
Mr. Calhoun was active in various civic and religious organizations, serving numerous terms as Deacon of First Baptist Church, Campaign Chairman and also President of United Way, Vice President of the Muscogee County Board of Education and President of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the Auburn Alumni Association and served as a Director of the Auburn Alumni Association.
Mr. Calhoun was an avid golfer and served as Chairman of the Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament at the Columbus Country Club and Chairman of the Southern Open P.G.A. Tournament at Green Island Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen Langley Calhoun.
He is survived by two sons, Keith Calhoun and his wife, Louise and the Reverend Dr. Kevin Calhoun and his wife Susan; six grandchildren, Katie Terrell and her husband Adam, Langley Calhoun, Reid Calhoun, Zach Calhoun, Robert Calhoun and Mary Helen Williams and her husband Stephon; four great grandchildren, Calhoun Terrell, Caroline Terrell, Hannah Terrell and Clarissa Ann Williams.
