Don was born February 16, 1947, in DeKalb County Georgia. He was raised in Columbus, Georgia, and graduated from Columbus High School. From 1967 to 1971, he proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, stationed at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA. It was there that he met the love of his life, Nancy Faye Tommey. His commitment to his nation was a true reflection of his strong character and sense of duty.
Professionally, Don was a Master Plumber, but his talents extended far beyond his trade. A man of many skills, he had a passion for mechanics, especially motors. He could often be found in his shop working on project vehicles. Among his most notable projects were a Willys Jeep, a Studebaker truck, and, most recently, a hot rod Chevrolet truck. Not only was Don willing to do the work himself, but he always took the time to teach others how to do it the right way. His patience and willingness to share his knowledge made him a mentor to many and a true example of generosity. His creativity also shone through in his love for knife-making and designing the machines to craft them. Don served as past president of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild.
Don’s life was defined not only by his work but by his heart for service. He volunteered with First Baptist Church, participating in their mission work and supporting the food closet. His love for music was evident in his enjoyment of gospel songs, his skill on the trumpet, and his time as a member of the First Presbyterian Church Handbell Choir.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Marion Tommey and Frances Marion McDaniel. Don is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy Faye Tommey, his children Albert Marion Tommey (Debra), Frank Sheram Tommey (Shriver), and Robert Elliott Tommey; his sister, Carol Smith; his brother, Jimmy Tommey (Peggy); and his grandchildren, Donovan and Landon, Ellie and Henry, and Evaleigh.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the home of Frank and Shriver in Columbus, Georgia, on December 4, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A service to Celebrate Don's Life will take place at the First Baptist Church (Porter Chapel), located at 212 12th St, Columbus, Georgia, on December 5, 2025, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Columbus Food Closet, P.O. Box 828, Columbus, Georgia, 31902, or to Columbus Hospice at www.columbushospice.com.
Don will be remembered for his generosity, his craftsmanship, and his devotion to faith, family, and country. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the countless memories shared with those who loved him.
