Edison Roy Nigh April 12, 1943 - February 15, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA— The Psalm states that "all the days ordained for me were marked out before one of them came to be". While those of us who loved him were taken by surprise, the Lord knew that February 15, 2010 would be the day He called Edison Roy Nigh home to be with Him! Ed was born April 12, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas, the youngest of 3 boys born to Kenneth and Elizabeth Nigh. He was active in Boy Scouts as a child, and as a leader when his children were young. If you saw him in jeans, he would be wearing his Philmont Scout Ranch belt buckle that he had since he was 14 years old! His 40+ year IT career began by hanging tape discs on IBM mainframes and teaching himself COBOL to program computers in the early days of software. He moved to Dallas, Texas in 1968, and was transferred to Atlanta, Georgia in 1986 while employed by Federated Systems Group. He was able to combine his love of hunting and fishing with travel to Alaska and Venezuela. Along with his brother Max, they drove the Tail of the Dragon in his retirement indulgence: a bright red Corvette convertible. During retirement, Ed was able to reconnect with another childhood pleasure: dancing. He worked at the Frances Turner Dance Studio for several years, and kept his commitment to serve others during retirement by volunteering as a dance instructor at local senior centers. For those unable to get up and dance, he would sit with them and just encourage them to tap their toes to the music. Ed taught the Reflectors Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, Columbus GA, where he was a member since 1999. He was also active in missions and Bible Study ministries. Ed is survived by his much loved children: David Paul Nigh of Denver Colorado, William Roy Nigh of Memphis, Tennessee and Julie Ann Cloutman of Taos New Mexico. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and his brother, Max Nigh of Brevard North Carolina. The expression "still waters run deep" was often used to describe Ed. He loved deeply, and was loved in return. We will miss him, but celebrate that he is with the Lord. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 19 at the First Baptist Church, Columbus GA with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., prior to the service. A private interment will be held in Laredo, KS. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbus, 212 12th Street, Columbus, GA 31901. Condolences may be offered at www.shcolumbus.com.
