Elizabeth Carter, age 73, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021. A visitation of family and friends will be held from 12:30 until 1:30 on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary; a celebration of Elizabeth’s life will follow at 2:00 pm at Parkhill Cemetery.
Elizabeth was born April 13, 1948, in Troy, Alabama; the daughter of James Ishmael Powell and Gladys Mavis Gibson Powell. She received her GED from Troy High School and then became a licensed beautician. Elizabeth married Samuel Carter on January 13, 1978, they were married for 43 years. Elizabeth was the owner of Open Door Daycare, she operated it for over 50 years. She cared for children until August 20th and she was hospitalized on August 21st. Elizabeth lived a life of service, always making sure others had what they needed, even if she had to go without. She learned and then taught others to appreciate what you have and to work for what you want, don’t give up and lastly, say what you mean and mean what you say. To know her, was a blessing, she was wonderful, she was full of spunk, and she loved everyone. She was always going and doing for her family and others, she never stopped. Her family meant the world to her, she loved them dearly. Being a wife, mother, and grandmother brought such joy and happiness to her. She loved the Atlanta Braves and attending their games, chips and salsa were a favorite, Conway Twitty never sang a bad song, and of course taking care of children was always, well, usually a pleasure. Her perfect flower was a rose and enjoyed collecting dolls. She loved her animals, wild or domestic, she helped to raise many squirrels and they always knew where and by whom to get fed. Elizabeth will be remembered as a loving wife, Grandma, sister, aunt, mom of many, and the best mom ever.
