
Elizabeth "Betty" White died on April 6, 2011 in Columbus, GA. She was 65. The daughter of Louis and Irene (Shellnut) McCarty, Betty was born in Columbus, GA., and graduated from Jordan High School in 1964. Before marrying, Betty worked at the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer and in civil service at Ft. Benning, GA. Later in life she worked as an executive secretary at Equifax (Atlanta), as office manager at Gerico Spa Corp (Tucker, GA.), and most recently as a part-time secretary at the Columbus Board of Realtors.
In 1969 Betty married Mark white. They were married 42 years. Betty enjoyed life to its fullest. A warm and loving person, she never met a stranger. Her glass was always half full. She traveled with husband throughout the Caribbean and to Mexico, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. She and Mark lived in Bermuda for five years where she made numerous, life-long friends, especially with members of the Bermuda Bridge Club. She was an avid tennis player, bowler and duplicate bridge player attaining Life Master status. She served as secretary of the Bermuda Bridge Club and as Vice President of the Columbus Bridge Club.
Betty was a wonderful homemaker, a devoted wife, a loving mother and a doting grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Mark; daughter, Tiffany McDowell; sons, Mark Jr. and Kevin; son-in-law, Navy Commander Christopher McDowell; three grandchildren, Jordan-Elizabeth, Parker, Landon; and her twin brother, William McCarty.
Final arrangements have been made with Striffler-Hamby Mortuary 4071 Macon Road Columbus. Betty elected to not have her body viewed. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The Reverend Gerald Shreck, pastor of St. Anne's, will conduct the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society P.O.
