Retired Sergeant Fred Warren Russell, 93, passed away on April 4, 2014. He was born in Lafollette, TN on December 23, 1920. Fred was married to the late Jessie Jamison Russell. Fred had a career in the US Army for 25 years. Fred was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. During the length of his 25 year career, Fred was awarded a Purple Heart with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal with one silver and one bronze loop, American Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one silver service star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Distinguished Unit Emblem and the United Nations Service Medal. Fred had a passion for fishing and hunting and enjoyed playing Bingo and watching Western films in his free time. Fred is survived by three daughters, Betty Sloan (Bill), Sue Campbell (Mike), and Billie June Lambert, his siblings, Kenneth Russell, Raymond Russell, Randall Russell, Effie Douglas, Evelyn Hicks, and Lydia Lowe and several grandchildren. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and Sampson Russell, his wife, Jessie J. Russell, one daughter, Barbara Russell Priester, and his siblings, Paul Russell, Aileen Weeks, Sheryl Russell, Cecil Russell, Clifford Russell, Burton Russell, Jean Aden, Earnest Russell, and Early Russell. The family would like to invite friends to join them at a visitation to celebrate Fred’s life on Saturday April 12, 2014, 1:00 PM at Striffler Hamby Funeral home, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus GA, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. An entombment will follow at Chapel of the Pines in Parkhill Cemetery.
