SFC (Ret.) George D. Perry, 78, passed away on August 5, 2013. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 9, 2013, in Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
SFC Perry was born August 29, 1934 in Ironton, Ohio to the late Luther and Alma Perry. He was a decorated war veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict, having earned numerous medals, the most notable being the Purple Heart and two Bronze Star Medals. He was in the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1974, he worked with Civil Service in Daegu, South Korea and then Ft. Benning as Fire Chief until his retirement there in 1989. SFC Perry then began to work at the Muscogee County Prison for 8 years until retiring after 8 years of service. SFC Perry was very passionate about being a mason, and was a member of the Mt. Hermon Lodge #304 F&AM. He was also the past president of the Columbus 173rd Airborne Society. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed dearly.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Perry of Columbus, GA; three sons, John Perry of El Paso, TX, Donnie Perry of Rochester, MN and Bob Perry of Columbus, GA; a granddaughter, Chrissy Perry; and two great-granddaughters, Evelynn and Katlinn.
