Gladys D. Lucas, age 104, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. She was born on November 22, 1920, in Anniston, Alabama to the late Henry Wills Dill and Annie Belle Cruse. Jackie as she was affectionately known by all who knew and loved her, loved her family dearly. She took great pride in providing the love and care her family required.
Jackie was married to the late Louis E. Lucas, Sr., with her husband’s military career bringing them back to the Columbus area to call home. Jackie was loving and supportive of her husband and growing family. Being a stay at home mom and housewife Jackie was in her element by learning the ins and outs of everyday life.
They had very little income at first while Louis was in the service, but they would always send tithe back to their home church. After Louis got out of the service, they moved near Wynnton Baptist and walked to church. They joined in 1947. Jackie was a very regular member of her Sunday School Class and was a church secretary for over 43 years. She was also a member of the Joyful Servants, the seniors at the church.
She loved her sons so much and while they were young, they had many good times together as they took them on vacation to Washington, DC, the mountains, and touring various cities in Florida and ending up at the beach. She and Louis had 48 wonderful years together and she had to make a great adjustment when Louis passed in 1990, as she had never taken care of any of the business.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Elvin Lucas, Sr.; her sister, Annie Mae Dill; and her brothers, Joe Dill, Guy Dill, and Hugh Dill.
She is survived by her two sons, Louis Elvin Lucas, Jr. of Blakely, Georgia and Michael Glenn Lucas of Meadow Vista, California; three grandchildren, Tammi (Lee) Godwin of Bainbridge, Georgia, Bliss (Lee) Halvorson of Fortson, Georgia, and Aimee (Brandon) Henderson of Dothan, Alabama; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Godwin of Bainbridge, Georgia, Madison and Callie Halvorson, both of Fortson, Georgia, and Monroe and Cohen Henderson, both of Dothan, Alabama.
A Graveside Service for Jackie will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 2:30 PM at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jackie's memory may be made to Wynnbrook Baptist Church, 500 River Knoll, Columbus, Georgia 31904.
