Columbus, Georgia- Hawtense Sasser Spann Chancellor, age 93, resident of Columbus, died on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled at Beallwood Baptist Church, 4650 Veterans Parkway, Columbus on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 2 p.m. with Reverend Billy Duncan and Reverend Tim Jones officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. Chancellor, daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Sasser, Sr. and Arzona Kirkland Sasser, was born November 18, 1919 in Faydette, AL. She was a member of Beallwood Baptist Church and also a member of the Eastern Star, Columbus Chapter #261. Mrs. Chancellor was retired from Bibb Manufacturing where she devoted over 37 years of faithful service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Almon R. Spann; her second husband, Ben Chancellor; two brothers, Howard Sasser and Chris Sasser, Jr.; three sisters, Gussie Gregory, Uvelle Strickland, and Ruth Stevenson.
Mrs. Chancellor is survived by one daughter, Dot Edmonds and her husband Jim of Columbus; one sister, Gwen Hawthorne of Smiths Station, AL; three grandchildren, Kimberly Byrd of Tallapoosa, GA, Ketih Edmonds and his wife Leighann of Smiths Station, AL, and Kay E. Garner and her husband David of Midland, GA; three step-children, Juanita Griffin of Columbus, Diane Chestnut and her husband Bobby, and Bob Chancellor and his wife Cheryl of Charlotte, NC; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
