A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 4:00 PM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus, Georgia. Family will visit with friends after the service. A private burial service will be at Fort Benning’s Main Post Cemetery on Friday, April 27, 2018.
Mr. Whitaker was born on November 21, 1928 to the late Basil Cornelius “Mike” Whitaker and Fannie Dillon Whitaker in Newhall, West Virginia. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict retiring after 22 years of service. Mr. Whitaker worked with Columbus College after his retirement from the U.S. Army. Among his passions were baseball and serving others. He was very active within the Little League Baseball community where he was known by many as Coach Whit. Coach Whit lived and breathed baseball and treasured the opportunity to coach and mentor numerous young kids for many years.
He leaves his loving memory to be cherished to his sons: Mike Whitaker (Sherry) and Mark Whitaker; granddaughters: Kayla Whitaker Ramsden (Andy), Kellie Whitaker, and Candice Parks (Kevin); grandson Chad Whitaker; great granddaughter, Ella Whitaker; great grandson, Grady Parks; sister, Teresa Bush of Ohio; and numerous other relatives and friends. Mr. Whitaker is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maria Whitaker; his brothers, Ernest, Odale, and Aldmer; and his sisters, Callie and Helen.
